Three Strategies for Choosing the Best Wallpaper for Your Décor

Mar 24th 2020

Considering the incredible variety of options available, wallpaper selection can be difficult. Fortunately, we've come up with a few simple considerations to help you narrow your options. When choosing a wallpaper, remember to keep in mind:

  1. What style you're aiming for
  2. How color, pattern, and texture affect a room
  3. What the environmental conditions are

1. Know your Style

Before you even start shopping wallpapers, you should have your desired aesthetic in mind. Perhaps you want to create a room along an established interior design trend, such as Cape Cod or Scandinavian. Or maybe you want to focus on a color palette, or a unifying motif. Whatever your vision, just make sure you've got it clear in your head from the get go. That way you're less likely to be distracted by designs that, while beautiful, don't suit your design goals.

2. Consider all Variables

When it comes to the look of a wallpaper there are three main variables at play:

  • Color
  • Pattern
  • Texture

While on their own each variable is simple, together they offer a dizzying range of possibilities. Entire books have been written on how to make these variables work for a given space, but in the interests of time we've drafted a few key examples.

For crafting intimate spaces, consider dark colors and large patterns. Dark colors tend to make rooms cozier, whereas lighter colors provide a sense of openness. Silky and luxurious textures will contribute a sense of glam, while a flat texture will come across as more formal.

To create a room that feels casual and playful, consider lighter colors and smaller patterns. Small, regularly spaced motifs tend to convey a sense of lightheartedness and fun. To make it feel more rustic, consider using plaid or gingham.

Finally, if you're hoping to disguise damage on a wall then texture is your friend. Grass cloth wallpaper has a natural, rustic beauty and is excellent at hiding imperfections. A more elegant option would be expanded vinyl in a damask or antique floral pattern.

3. Understand the Demands of the Space

One of the biggest challenges of wallpaper is its tendency to peel when exposed to moisture. If you're applying wallpaper in a bathroom or a kitchen, you'll want to look for paper backed vinyl wallpaper. This is the older style of wallpaper, and is generally considered challenging to apply correctly. However it's durability and moisture resistance are absolutely necessary for high-humidity rooms.

For rooms exposed to less water and less wear and tear, consider choosing wallpaper with a non-woven backing instead. Non-woven backing is a much more recent invention, and has contributed greatly wallpaper's resurgence in popularity. It is so easy to hang that even beginning DIY'ers can do it successfully. However, its reduced durability is an important factor to consider when making your final decision.

Compliment Wallpaper with a Sliding Barn Door

There's something special about the look of a sliding door, resting perfectly flat against a gorgeously papered wall. In that moment the door becomes a piece of art in its own right. Not to mention sliding barn doors will never swing open and gouge the paper, guaranteeing your hard work will last.
