Hot Color Trends for Your Summer 2020 Decor

Jul 14th 2020

Look out, walls: rich color is back. The previous decade was awash in cool neutrals like gray, blue, and white, along with cool and subtle pinks, greens, and matte black. We saw scatterings here and there of brass, rose gold, and splashes of yellow, but by and large, the 2010s wanted minimalism, simple living, and comfort without the contrast.

Now, feelings about spaces are growing warmer and more inclusive, and so are the colors we put on our walls and decor. These days, it's not enough to see color on a wall. We want to feel more from our living spaces. We want to make them an extension of ourselves, a place where our thoughts and emotions can come home to rest.

Here are the color trends we're seeing for paint and decor as we move through the roaring 2020s.

Natural Greens

Green has been making its way back into interior design for a few years, but you'd primarily see it take form as potted houseplants, artwork, or accent pillows. This color is resurging in pleasingly punchy organic tones, from olive and sage green to emerald and kelly green. There's no single way to play with green, but we recommend using it on the walls and for upholstering large statement furniture. This makes for an instant welcome.

Jewel Tones

In a more monochromatic space, jewel tones pop dramatically. That's why we love seeing all those rich, vibrant colors in interior design spaces. 2020 is all about rich tones with plenty of depth, which is why you'll be seeing colors like amethyst, citrine, magenta, ocher yellow, emerald green, and sapphire blue. To try out the look for yourself, use two to three jewel colors and layer them for effect.

You could add the colors to oversized chairs, curtains, and vases, leaving the sofa and walls as a moody gray. Or you might find inspiration in aubergine walls with ocher yellow accent pillows and artwork, leaving the monochromatic colors to the floor, sliding barn door, and lighting scheme.

Rich Blues

Blue is a staple color, and for good reason. It's trusting, comforting, and a perennial favorite for any generation. In 2020, though, we're seeing blue step out into the spotlight a bit more. Instead of pastel blues or safe blue-grays, blue has taken on new undertones for a deeper, more complex look.

We love the new blues, from slate to cobalt to indigo and more. We're also seeing a return of navy, midnight, and classic blues, but they have richness that elevates them above a flat, matte tone.

Warm Neutrals

For those of you in love with neutrals, the good news is that neutrals are still on-trend. From 2020 on, though, they're becoming warmer. Interior design is casting off the cool neutrals in favor of warmer greys, creamier whites, blushier pinks, and intriguing rose golds.

Fill your walls with the newest neutrals, whether as all-over paint or in combination with an eye-catching wallpaper and chevron-style barn door. You'll find that these neutrals are less spring fresh and more autumn glow, with hints of earthy terracotta, mushroom, or sandstone.

Earth and Fire Hues

This final trend is one of our favorites. There's something perennially fresh and summer-like about earth and fire hues, where sunshine and rich Southwest landscapes come out to play. Big trends here are for colors like melon, coral, peach, brimstone, sandstone, and passionfruit. You want to make sure that you opt for colors with warm undertones to avoid any shocking oranges and yellows that won't let you relax.

Fall in love with these color trends for 2020. We find them incredibly inspiring and perfect for adding to any room of the home. If you're ready for even more functionality, check out our online selection of sliding barn doors or contact us at Barndoorz for personalized support.
