Introducing Live Edge Slabs from BarnDoorz

Jul 7th 2020

We believe that there's something almost magical about a live edge slab. From the natural, intricate wood grain to the gently curving edges, a live edge slab seems to practically float on air—especially when used to design your home space. These slabs make a gorgeous addition to any home.

What Are Live Edge Slabs?

Live edge slabs are pieces of solid wood—as they look when first cut at the lumber mill. Since the tree limbs and trunk are not rotated during the cutting process, they still display the tree's natural bark and beautiful curves.

Trees are naturally variable and grow to different widths. This means we use a different creation process than what we use for our customary premium barn doors. In many cases, our live edge slabs are made from one piece of wood. We also join two or more thinner pieces to create large, beautiful slabs perfect for a sliding barn door or table top.

What Tree Species Do We Use?

All of our live edge slabs come from the tropical monkeypod tree. Also known as the rain tree, monkeypod has a glorious canopy with thick, spreading limbs. Since it's a fast-growing species found throughout Southeast Asia, it does well even after being cut. This rapid growth ensures that we can harvest the tree while following sustainable practices.

Finishing Options

From our finished to unfinished options, we couldn't decide which was our favorite. That's why we're proud to offer both.

Finished wood slabs feature a smooth coating of urethane sealant. This durable sealant protects the slab from scratches and dents and helps to give it a sleek shine. Since live edge slabs are made from natural wood, they need the opportunity to breathe and rebalance their moisture content. That's why we don't apply urethane to the top and bottom edges of the slabs.

Unfinished wood slabs have a smooth sanded surface but don't have a urethane coating. You can leave the slab in its natural state or apply a stain or finish of your own choosing.

You won't need to worry about drilling holes to use our live edge slabs as a sliding modern barn door. We do the work for you. Plus, all of our hardware is designed to fit any slab.

Creative Ways to Welcome Live Edge Slabs into Your Home

Wondering how you can use our live edge slabs? Let us count the ways.

Use as a Sliding Barn Door

Wood slabs make excellent barn doors. They have natural star appeal and can become an instant conversation piece when installed in the home's social hub.

Upgrade Your Dining Table

If your dining table has become too small for friends and family, upgrade it. With a live edge slab table measuring 7 to 7 1/2 feet on average, you can easily gather eight or more people for a social celebration.

Create an Epoxy Resin End Table

For those with handy DIY skills, use one of our unfinished slabs for a stunning epoxy resin end table. You can custom-cut your slab, fit it into a leak-proof frame, and then pour in colored epoxy to fill the gaps. No one will have a piece of furniture exactly like yours.

Add a Hallway Console Table

Finally, use an unfinished wood slab and DIY custom-cut it to create a narrow console table for the home. These console tables fit nearly any room, but our favorite spots include the hallway, living room, or dining room.
