How to Make Any Room the Perfect Guest Room

Mar 18th 2019

We all want houseguests to feel welcome, but what if they could feel pampered as well? Think about a five-star hotel. While you may not have the budget to fully embrace everything a luxury hotel offers, you can mimic the experience. Follow these simple guidelines and you can create a luxurious guest room that will put a smile on any house guest’s face.

Don’t Skimp on the Bed

Hands down, the bed and its bedding are the most important things in your guest room. Don’t relegate an old hand-me-down saggy mattress to the guest room. If a new bed is not in your budget, consider a high-quality air mattress. The good ones are fairly comfortable, even when directly on the floor, and more so when placed on an old box spring. Then, allocate some of your dollars to quality bedding. Nothing beats good bed linens and pillows. Be sure invest in decent linens, pillows, and plenty of blankets for your guest bed. Doesn’t it feel wonderful to climb into a well-made bed with beautiful, soft, high-quality linens? That’s one of those luxury hotel experiences we all love. Recreate it at your home and your guests will truly love you for it.

Color Palette

Pick a warm inviting color palette. You can do an accent wall in a warm yellow or gold, and match it with or pick a complementary color for your bedding and bath linens. Neutrals are also a safe bet for linens but don’t be afraid to have a little fun in the guest room. The best guest rooms will appeal to any guest because they have an unforgettable style. A color scheme with an unusual stenciled accent wall design element or some showy artwork appeals to a lot of people. Unless it doubles as a home office or other room that is used every day, you can decorate it more creatively. Have fun with it. But, remember, you want the design and color to appeal to a wide range of guests.

Think Like a Guest

Your guest will likely want what you would so think about those special touches that make your favorite hotel stays just right. What amenities make your visit that much more enjoyable? Include things like tissues, a lighted alarm clock, a bottle of water, a hairdryer, an extra blanket, a good reading lamp, and a charging station for electronics. If you have space, it’s also a bonus to include hanging storage and a place to put away luggage. A side chair is another nice extra. Guests love somewhere to sit in the evenings that is not the bed. Make it feel like home with a place to read and relax, maybe even listen to some music. Think about how you’d like to be in that room if you didn’t have full run of the house. You might even want to spend a night in the guest room yourself to test it out. See what it feels like to stay there and outfit the room accordingly.

Provide Bathrobes

This is an inexpensive way to create luxury. I, for one, forget to pack a bathrobe and am always sorry that I do. What a treat it would be to find one in a guest bedroom! You can purchase these from your local bedding supply store and make them available to guests when they visit. All you have to do is launder them. It’s a lovely way to make someone feel at home and cozy.

Deliver Coffee

Wouldn’t it be nice to have morning coffee time without having to make an appearance in the kitchen? Self-serve individual coffee makers are affordable and don’t take up much shelf space these days. If it’s in your budget, it’s a nice touch to provide one for your guests. This is an appliance that doesn’t have to permanently live in the guest room. Know your guest. If they are a passionate coffee drinker, what a wonderful extra it would be for you to pop your self-serve coffee maker in the room during their stay. Most people have more than one way of making coffee so if you do have a small machine, consider putting it to the guest room for a few days. If you don’t have one, it’s a small investment to make and you might just love it yourself when your guest heads home.

Provide Privacy with a Barn Door

It goes without saying that your guest will want privacy while staying with you. One of the most stylish and cozy ways to create privacy is with a barn door. Consider replacing an existing door or adding a barn door where there isn’t one to provide a statement-making private nook for your guests. A barn door is a wonderful way to add a rustic aesthetic touch to your guest room decor as well as to increase the value of your home. Sliding barn doors are also environmentally friendly and take up less space than swinging doors. Interested in what barn door might work best in your home? Contact us today, we’re here to help.
