Interior Design Trends for 2019

Jan 21st 2019

It’s a New Year with cool new design trends and long-held favorites still on the books. According to experts, there are exciting patterns and colors you will want to look at if you’re renovating or building in 2019. And, there are classics that stand the test of time and never seem to go out of style.

Warm Neutrals

New for this year: a color change. Designers say we are moving away from the cool grey tones of the last few years to warm neutrals. Many recommend taupe or warm beige to soften a room. You can do this with paint, furniture, and accessories. A couch in warm beige, a few coats of cream paint and a warm cherry wood coffee table will give your living room a whole new look. Add a few accent pillows in cream and yellow and you have a pop of color while keeping the look warm and fresh. Natural colors are the name of the game this year and these colors have staying power.

Curvy Furniture

We are typically plugged into technology day and night. That plus busy schedules have made family time and talking a bit of a lost art. We want that intimacy back. As a result, we’re starting to see more curvy sofas, settees, and chairs versus the boxy, large furniture of years past. And, the new curved furniture is far more comfortable than it has been. While previously relegated to formal rooms, this more ergonomic updated furniture has a place in our living rooms and dens where families can meet, unplug, and visit with each other.

Mixing and matching

You will no longer see furniture sets that match sharing one name or manufacturer. Living rooms are not generic showrooms. Instead, create an eclectic mix that fits your personality. Collect furniture here and there. Mix and match using pieces from different design styles, periods, or use family heirlooms. It is charming and chic to show your personal style. You will also find this is a great way to add a few new pieces without breaking your budget. You don’t need a complete overhaul to give your room a new look in 2019.

Bold Florals

Many designers claim that what’s on the runway also goes in our homes. The runway this year is peppered with great big blossoms and bold, even abstract, floral patterns. This is not your grandmother’s floral. This is new and exciting for 2019. You can use it on wallpaper, pillow accessories, chair coverings, bedding, anywhere you need a bright change. This design trend is fun and inexpensive to start house-wide with small steps. Give it a try.

Barn Doors

Barn doors are a classic and are ever popular in homes from renovations to new construction both for their looks and space-saving properties. Because there are a variety of styles from rustic to traditional to modern, barn doors match any decor. They bring a new look to your home along with functionality. In addition, barn doors can also bring increased value which is key if you are planning to sell or simply want to make smart renovations.

One great way to use barn doors is in today’s oft-seen large open concept rooms with living and kitchen in one. While barn doors may mostly stay open if put between the two, there is still significant visual and functional appeal in a large room. You are able to create separate spaces when desired, you add value to your home with the addition of another “room,” and barn doors make a beautiful design statement.
