Can You Use a Barn Door for a Bathroom? Privacy and Locks

Yes. A barn door works on a bathroom when it overlaps the opening by 2 inches on each side, carries a privacy lock and hangs on hardware that resists rust. It blocks less sound than a hinged door, so it suits a primary bathroom off a bedroom better than a powder room beside the dining table.

Which bathrooms suit a barn door?
A barn door suits a bathroom where a swinging door would be in the way and the room outside is a private one. These are our recommendations by room.
- Primary bathroom off a bedroom: good fit. The door saves the floor space a swinging door needs, and the only people nearby share the bedroom. If the toilet faces the doorway, add a lock and size the door to cover the trim.
- Hall bathroom shared by the household: works with a lock and a solid door. More sound reaches the hall than it would past a hinged door. A solid door cuts the sound that passes through the panel, and a lock keeps the door closed.
- Powder room off a living or dining room: choose a hinged door. Guests sit within earshot, and a sliding door leaves open edges that sound and odor pass through.
- Bathroom with no free wall beside the opening: choose another door. A barn door needs clear wall equal to its own width to slide open. Without it, compare a pocket door or a hinged door.
How much can someone see past a closed barn door?
Only a narrow slice, when the door is sized with enough overlap. A barn door hangs in front of the wall instead of closing into a frame, so a narrow gap stays open between the back of the door and the wall. The overlap, the part of the door that extends past the opening, blocks the view through that gap.
We recommend 2 inches of overlap on each side of the opening. More overlap narrows the angle someone could see through, and so does a smaller gap. Trim pushes the door farther off the wall, so on a cased opening we size the door to cover the casing.
Before you order, stand where a person would stand in the hall or bedroom and look at each edge of the opening. If the toilet, the shower or a mirror sits in line with an edge, add width on that side.
On a rail kit the door also rides 1/2 inch off the floor so it can roll, and light shows through that space.
Do glass barn doors give a bathroom privacy?
Clear glass gives none. Textured glass blurs the view and still passes daylight, which helps a bathroom with no window. Our Santa Monica and Beverly doors come in Water, Rain, Reeds and Cloud textures as well as Clear, and our guide to glass options describes each one.
Textured glass still shows light and movement. To block the view through the panel, choose a solid door or a mirror. The Mirror Barn Door is solid birch, 1-3/4 inches thick, with a mirror on one side or both. It comes in 36-inch and 42-inch widths and gives the room a full-length mirror without using any wall.
How much sound does a barn door block?
Less than a hinged door of the same thickness. A hinged door closes against a stop on three sides. A barn door leaves its edges open, and sound and odor travel through them.
A solid door blocks more of the sound that would pass through the panel itself. Our MDF doors are solid and 1-3/8 inches thick. Seals and sweeps close part of the gap, and we cover them in our guide on how to soundproof an interior barn door.
How do you lock a bathroom barn door?
You lock a barn door with a privacy latch reached from inside the bathroom. We sell two.
- Barn Door Privacy Lock. A teardrop-shaped steel latch, in black powder coat or stainless steel. The latch mounts on the edge of the door opening and a slotted plate mounts on the back of the door. Rotate the latch into the slot to lock the door. The plate sits over a slot cut into the door, 1/8 inch wide, 1-1/2 inches long and 1/4 inch deep. You cut that slot during installation, because the lock sits in a different place on every opening. This lock is made for doors on a rail kit and does not fit Houdini Hardware. Most of our door pages let you add it while you build the door.
- Eye Latch. Our Eye Latch Privacy Lock is a hook and eye in a black finish. The hook drops into the eye to hold the door closed.
Both latches work from inside the bathroom, and neither uses a key. They keep the door from sliding open and are not meant to secure a room. In a home with small children, mount the latch above their reach so a child cannot lock the door from inside.
The back of the door needs a pull as well. A handle that stands proud of the door would hit the wall or the trim as the door slides, so the back pull sits flush. We cut the pocket for our inset Vista handle at the factory.
Will steam damage a barn door?
It can. Steam can rust plain steel hardware and swell unfinished wood. These five steps protect both.
- Choose stainless steel hardware. Steam can rust plain steel over time, and our hardware warranty does not cover rust. Stainless steel resists it better. The Stainless Steel Slade and Stainless Steel Gage kits each carry a door up to 220 pounds. On our MDF doors we recommend the Slade, which bolts through the door.
- Hang the door on the dry side of the wall. When the door slides along the bedroom or hall wall, the rail and rollers stay outside the bathroom and only the back of the door faces the steam.
- Finish every surface. Wood moves as humidity changes. If you order a door unfinished or in white primer, finish every face and edge, including the top and bottom, before you hang it.
- Let the door adjust to the house. Lay it flat in a clean, dry room for at least one full day before you install it. Our installation guide gives the steps.
- Run the exhaust fan during and after every shower.
Which hardware works best on a bathroom barn door?
A rail kit works over any floor. Houdini Hardware hides the rail and needs a hard floor or tight-weave carpet. The floor on the side where the door travels decides which one fits.
A rail kit hangs the door from a rail above the opening and works over any floor. Add the Barn Door Soft-Close to a door up to 176 pounds and the door slows itself at both ends of the rail, which keeps a late-night trip quiet.
Our patented Houdini Hardware hides the rail and rollers behind the door. The wheels roll on the floor and carry the full weight of the door, and two soft-close dampers are built in. It fits doors up to 48 inches wide and 175 pounds. It does not work on most carpet. Only tight-weave carpet is compatible, so check the floor on the side where the door travels. If that floor is plush carpet, choose a rail kit. The Barn Door Privacy Lock does not fit Houdini Hardware, so ask us about a latch before you order Houdini for a bathroom.
What size barn door does a bathroom need?
With a rail kit, order a door 4 inches wider and 2 inches taller than the opening. That gives 2 inches of overlap on each side. Each product page lists standard sizes, and we build custom sizes on request.

Check four more things before you order.
- Trim. On a cased opening, measure from the outside of the trim on one side to the outside of the trim on the other for the width, and from the floor to the top of the casing for the height.
- Space above the door. A rail kit needs 6-1/2 inches between the top of the door and the ceiling.
- The wall beside the opening. Look for a light switch, a towel bar, a thermostat or a vent in the path of the door. An open door that covers the light switch gets old fast. Our post on how much room a barn door needs covers the wall in detail.
- Houdini sizes differently. Add 8 inches to the opening width for a door that slides fully clear of the opening, and add 1 inch to the height when the door boot mounts on the bottom of the door. Trim counts toward the width: a 30-inch opening with 6 inches of trim needs a door at least 44 inches wide. Houdini also limits how deep the casing can be, so check its installation instructions before you order. On a bathroom, you can leave a few inches of the door across the opening when it is open, so the pull on the bathroom side stays within reach.
