Do Barn Doors Keep Out Drafts? How to Seal One for Winter

Oct 27th 2026

A barn door does not seal a doorway the way a hinged door does, because it hangs in front of the wall instead of closing into a frame. Air moves through the small gaps along its sides, top and bottom. A door sized with enough overlap, built as a solid panel and fitted with a few simple seals still cuts the drafts between two rooms. We build custom barn doors in Houston, and these are our answers for the cold months, including when to order to have a door hung before Christmas.

Why does a barn door let drafts through?

A barn door rolls on a rail mounted above the opening, so it sits a short distance out from the wall. That leaves a narrow gap behind the door along both sides and across the top. On a rail kit, the door also rides about 1/2 inch above the floor so it can roll freely.

A hinged door closes against a stop on three sides. A barn door has no stop, so the air in a warm room and a cold room can move around it. The fixes below shrink those gaps; none of them turns a sliding door into an airtight one.

How do you size a barn door to cut drafts?

On a rail kit, order the door 4 inches wider and 2 inches taller than the opening. That gives 2 inches of overlap on each side, covers the top of the opening, blocks light and sound, and leaves less open gap for air to move through. If the opening has trim, size the door to cover the trim, since the casing pushes the door farther off the wall. Houdini Hardware sizes differently, so check its installation instructions before you order.

More overlap helps. Going up to the next standard width adds overlap on both sides, as long as the wall beside the opening has room for the wider door to slide. Our post on how much room a barn door needs covers the wall.

Which barn door suits a drafty doorway?

Choose a solid door when the goal is to close a room off. Our MDF barn doors are solid and 1-3/8 inches thick, and our Mirror Barn Door is solid birch, 1-3/4 inches thick, with a mirror on one side or both.

Our glass barn doors suit a doorway where you want daylight to pass between rooms. We do not sell an insulated barn door.

How do you seal the gaps around a barn door?

Start with the gap at the floor.

  • Lay a draft stopper. A fabric draft stopper along the bottom of the closed door blocks the floor gap and moves out of the way when you open it.
  • Add a bottom sweep. A brush sweep on the bottom edge narrows the floor gap for good. Check that it clears the floor guide that keeps the door in line.
  • Add weatherstripping to the back edges. Weatherstripping sized to the gap, along the back of the door where it overlaps the wall, narrows the side gaps. Our guide on soundproofing an interior barn door compares seals and sweeps.
  • Keep the floor guide in place. The floor guide stops the door from drifting away from the wall at the bottom. If your floor will not take a guide, our Wall Mount Barn Door Floor Guide attaches to the baseboard or trim instead.
  • Add soft-close. Our Barn Door Soft-Close slows the door into its closed position, so it settles closed instead of slamming.

Can you use a barn door on an outside wall or a garage?

No. Our barn doors are made for interior use only. A door to the outside, a garage or a porch needs an exterior door built and sealed for weather.

Inside the house, a barn door suits doorways between rooms you heat: a living room and a dining room, a bedroom and a bathroom, a hall and an office. For a room you keep closed and unheated all winter, a hinged door that closes against a stop will hold the heat better.

Does winter weather affect a wood barn door?

Wood takes on and gives off moisture as the air changes, and heated winter air is dry. Two steps help a new door settle in:

  • Let it adjust before you hang it. Lay the door flat in a clean, dry, room-temperature room for at least one full day, as our installation guide describes.
  • Finish every face. If you order an unfinished or primed door, finish all faces and edges, including the top and bottom, before you hang it.

Common Questions

Barn Doors and Drafts: Frequently Asked Questions

Do barn doors keep cold air out?

A barn door cuts drafts between rooms but never seals like a hinged door, because it hangs in front of the wall and leaves small gaps at the sides, top and bottom. On a rail kit, size it 4 inches wider and 2 inches taller than the opening, choose a solid door, and add a bottom sweep or draft stopper to keep more of the cold out.

How do you stop a draft under a barn door?

Lay a fabric draft stopper along the bottom of the closed door, or fit a brush sweep to the bottom edge. A barn door on a rail kit rides about 1/2 inch above the floor, so the bottom gap is the first one to close. Make sure a sweep clears the floor guide.

Can you insulate a barn door?

We do not sell an insulated barn door. Choose a solid door, such as our 1-3/8 inch solid MDF doors or our 1-3/4 inch solid birch Mirror Barn Door, and add weatherstripping along the back edges that overlap the wall.

Can a barn door be used as an exterior door?

No. Our barn doors are made for interior use only. A door to the outside, a garage or a porch needs an exterior door built and sealed for weather.

When should I order a barn door to have it before Christmas?

Order most of our doors by November 20, 2026, and Birch Modern, Santa Monica and Beverly doors by November 13. We currently build most doors within 3 weeks, Birch Modern doors within 4, and freight takes up to 7 business days. The Quick-Ship Door Kit leaves the next business day.
